My trip to Gangotri-Gomukh
It was a clear warm night when we started our Gangotri trip from Noida. There were eight of us in two different tractors(Tata Indica). Our first stop was at Rishikesh about 230 KM from our place from there we had to take the NH94(Rishikesh-Yamunotri National Highway). It was very early in the morning when we reached Rishikesh we had to wait for about an hour or so since the Highway is closed from 8 in the night to 3 in the morning.
Then started our up hill climb with the mighty Ganges juxtaposing us throughout (although that started right from Haridwar). Enroute to Gangotri is the Tehri Hydel project site where a huge dam is being constructed for power generation across Ganges and then Uttarkashi, we had lunch there in Uttar kashi me and one of my friend trodded along the narrow lanes of the town to visit the Kasi Viswanath temple with Bhagirathi(Ganges) flowing nearby. It was about evening when we reached Gangotri. We stayed in a State owned hotel(Hope i need not say anything about the ambience).
Next day early morning we started our trek to Gomukh which is 17 KM from Gangotri. The place throughout was like heaven(i have seen those kinda stuff only in Wall papers) with Snow clad mountains and forests around . From someone from Cooumpatti it was like Switzerland. Ganges emerges from a steep glacier in Gomukh which is really worth to watch.
Some tips to share if you plan for this trip(which we failed to follow)....
1) Do some regular walking before starting trips to any of these places
2) Best season to visit Gomukh is during Summer months of May-August.
3) Carry enough winter clothes, Medicines.
4) Never try to cover the distance in 1 day, plan your trip so that you stay for a night before returning back to Gangotri
